Vantara, a well-known wildlife rehabilitation center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, has issued a detailed clarification regarding the recent controversy over Mahadevi, the elephant relocated from Kolhapur. The organization stated that Mahadevi’s transfer was carried out strictly under the orders of the court, not by any independent decision taken by Vantara.
Mahadevi, a 36-year-old elephant, had been living in a Jain monastery located in Nandani village, Kolhapur district, Maharashtra, for over three decades. When she was recently shifted to Vantara, it triggered public outrage and protests in Kolhapur. Many locals, emotionally connected to Mahadevi, demanded her immediate return, leading to debates and media coverage. Amidst the rising tensions, Vantara clarified that it had no role in initiating Mahadevi’s relocation and was merely complying with a legal directive.
Vantara Explains Its Role in Mahadevi’s Transfer
The NGO associated with Vantara explained that they acted purely as a “receiving center” as per the Bombay High Court’s order dated July 16, 2025. The decision was taken after serious concerns were raised about Mahadevi’s deteriorating health and mental condition. The court, after reviewing reports from the Maharashtra Forest Department and a High-Powered Committee (HPC) set up by the Supreme Court, deemed it necessary for Mahadevi to be shifted to a facility where she could receive proper care and treatment.
Vantara emphasized that they did not approach or request the authorities to send Mahadevi to their sanctuary. Their role began only after the court designated them as the responsible care center for the elephant’s rehabilitation. The entire process was executed under the strict supervision of government officials and in compliance with judicial orders.
Why Did The Court Order Mahadevi’s Relocation to Vantara?
The Bombay High Court passed the relocation order after it was informed that Mahadevi was suffering from multiple health issues and had been living in confinement for years. Reports submitted by wildlife experts and NGOs highlighted that Mahadevi was enduring severe physical ailments, including:
- Fungal infection in her feet (foot rot)
- Advanced arthritis affecting her mobility
- Overgrown and damaged nails
- Signs of psychological distress like repetitive head shaking
These health problems were compounded by years of isolation and lack of proper veterinary care. Recognizing the urgency, the court decided that Mahadevi required specialized treatment and a more suitable habitat for her recovery, which Vantara could provide.
The Supreme Court later upheld the Bombay High Court’s decision on July 25, 2025, reinforcing that the relocation was essential for Mahadevi’s welfare. The case is now scheduled for a compliance report on August 11, 2025.
Mahadevi’s Current Condition at Vantara
After Mahadevi arrived at Vantara, a team of veterinary specialists and caregivers began her intensive treatment and rehabilitation process. According to Vantara, her broken nails are now being carefully treated, and the fungal infections are being addressed through a medically supervised regimen. She has also been unchained, allowing her to roam freely in open, natural enclosures designed to reduce her mental stress.
In addition to medical care, Mahadevi is now receiving a nutritious diet, mental stimulation activities, and companionship with other elephants. These efforts are aimed at not just healing her physical injuries but also improving her emotional well-being after years of solitude.
Vantara believes that with continuous care, Mahadevi will gradually regain her health and live a more natural, stress-free life within their sanctuary.
Local Sentiments and Vantara’s Response
Despite the legal basis of Mahadevi’s transfer, her removal from Kolhapur sparked significant resentment among the local community. Residents of Nandani village and Kolhapur city organized silent protest marches, expressing their deep emotional bond with Mahadevi. For them, she was not just an elephant but a symbol of their cultural and spiritual heritage.
Responding to these sentiments, Vantara stated that they completely understand and respect the feelings of the people of Kolhapur. However, they stressed that the organization was obligated to follow the court’s directives and that Mahadevi’s well-being was the top priority. Vantara reiterated that the decision was not theirs but that of the judiciary, based on expert assessments of Mahadevi’s critical health condition.
